Mark.HEXBIN and hexbin(): a 2D histogram over a hexagonal lattice – continuous (x, y) points counted into hexagonal cells and drawn as colored hexagons. The lattice tiles the plane without the axis-aligned artifacts a rectangular grid shows on diagonal structure, which is the reason it exists alongside hist2d().
