polarbar() over named columns of a dataframe_mojo DataFrame (#743). Each argument names a column instead of holding the values. The axis titles default to the categories and values column names.

See Plot.encode_frame() for how columns are read and what a column with missing values does.

Args:

  • df (DataFrame): The frame to read.
  • categories (String): The string column for this channel.
  • values (String): The numeric column for this channel.
  • padding (Float64): See the list overload.
  • theme (Theme): See the list overload.
  • width (Int): See the list overload.
  • height (Int): See the list overload.
  • title (String): See the list overload.
  • subtitle (String): See the list overload.
  • x_title (String): See the list overload.
  • y_title (String): See the list overload.

Returns:

Chart[PolarBar]: The finished chart – unrendered.

Raises:

Error: A named column is missing, has the wrong dtype for its channel, or has missing values.

A circular column chart: bar()’s categorical bars bent around a circle instead of a straight baseline, trading precise length comparison for a compact, radial layout.

Mark.POLAR_BAR over a categorical x and continuous y (the same shape bar()/pie() take; values must be non-negative, with at least one positive). Bars radiate from the center, one equal-width angular slot per category, length proportional to value / max(values). See _render_polar_bar for how this differs from nightingale().

Example:

from dataviz import polarbar
from dataviz import save

def main() raises:
    var direction: List[String] = [
        "N", "NE", "E", "SE", "S", "SW", "W", "NW",
    ]
    # Illustrative share of observations from each direction; sums to 100%.
    var frequency: List[Int] = [18, 12, 9, 7, 11, 14, 16, 13]

    var c = polarbar(
        direction,
        frequency,
        title="Illustrative Wind Direction Frequency (%)",
    )
    save(c, "docs/src/examples/out_polarbar.svg")

Parameters:

  • dtype (DType)

Args:

  • categories (List[String]): One equal-width angular slot per entry, in the given order.
  • values (List[Scalar[dtype]]): Each bar’s length, proportional to value / max(values); every value must be non-negative, and at least one positive.
  • padding (Float64): Gap taken out of each bar’s angular slot; defaults to 0.2.
  • theme (Theme): Full styling knobs beyond this function’s own parameters (colors, margins, fonts, gridlines, …) – see Theme’s docstring.
  • width (Int): Pixel width of the returned Plot (.size()).
  • height (Int): Pixel height of the returned Plot (.size()).
  • title (String): The chart’s title, shown above the plot.
  • subtitle (String): A secondary line shown under the title.
  • x_title (String): The x-axis caption.
  • y_title (String): The y-axis caption.

Returns:

Chart[PolarBar]: The finished chart – unrendered. Call save(plot, path) to write it (any of .svg/.png/.bmp), or render(plot)/render_svg(plot) for the explicit two-step.
